Gyökeres extends scoring streak as Sweden beat Romania to stay top
Viktor Gyökeres scored the only goal as Sweden beat Romania 1-0 in Bucharest on Monday, October 5, maintaining their lead in Nations League Group B4. The Swedish Football Association reported that his 13th-minute finish extended his scoring run in the competition to seven consecutive matches, a Nations League record.
Watch the highlights:
The goal followed a move involving Lucas Bergvall and Besfort Zeneli before Alexander Bernhardsson delivered a cross from the right. Sebastian Nanasi met the delivery, but his effort struck the post. Gyökeres was in position to convert the rebound and give Graham Potter's side an advantage they would protect for the remainder of the match.
Romania's goalkeeper Otto Hindrich helped prevent the visitors from adding to their lead before half-time, including a stop against Gyökeres, according to Romanian broadcaster TVR. Sweden also threatened through Bernhardsson and captain Victor Lindelöf. At the other end, Dennis Man attempted to find the top corner but could not bring the hosts level before the interval.
Romania created further opportunities after the break. TVR reported that Nicolae Stanciu tested Viktor Johansson in the 57th minute, with the goalkeeper recovering to secure the ball before Man could capitalise. Six minutes later, Man found Florin Tănase during a counterattack, but Johansson stopped the resulting shot from an angle. Romania's improved attacking spell did not produce an equaliser.
The defeat left Romania without a point after four games. Their earlier results in the group were a 2-1 loss away to Sweden, a 4-2 home defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 6-0 loss in Poland. Bosnia and Herzegovina beat Poland 1-0 in Monday's other group match, leaving Sweden on 10 points, Bosnia on eight and Poland on four.
Sweden therefore completed the four-match window unbeaten, with three wins and a draw. The Swedish association's report described a second half in which the visitors had to withstand Romanian pressure before recovering the initiative late on. Their remaining group fixtures are against Bosnia and Herzegovina at home and Poland away in November, with first place still to be decided.
