Guimarães winner seals Arsenal comeback against Leeds
Bruno Guimarães came off the bench to score the winner as Arsenal fought back to beat Leeds 2-1, ending the visitors’ unbeaten run. According to The Guardian’s match report, the midfielder struck nine minutes after his introduction, completing a turnaround that began with Riccardo Calafiori’s equaliser after James Justin had put Leeds ahead in the second half.
Watch the highlights:
Arsenal started with six English players, something they had not done since 1999, while Leeds manager Daniel Farke retained the lineup used in the previous three matches. Neither team scored before the interval, although both created opportunities. Noni Madueke supplied crosses from Arsenal’s left, and Kai Havertz headed one chance straight at Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford from eight yards in the 21st minute.
Leeds repeatedly tested Arsenal with deliveries from wide positions. Jayden Bogle met a Gabriel Gudmundsson cross in the 25th minute, only for his effort to be inadvertently blocked by teammate Anton Stach. Bogle then forced David Raya into a save from a narrow angle after an Ao Tanaka cross. Raya also kept out Gudmundsson shortly before the break, leaving the teams level despite those openings.
The visitors continued to threaten after half-time. Justin and Tanaka sent shots narrowly wide before Justin broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Gudmundsson got beyond Ben White on the left and delivered a low cross that Raya was unable to intercept. Noah Okafor almost extended Leeds’ advantage three minutes later but could not apply the finishing touch to Bogle’s delivery.
Arsenal responded through Calafiori, who scored his second Premier League goal of the season. Madueke’s cross reached White at the far post, and his header went beyond Trafford before Calafiori finished. Mikel Arteta then made three substitutions, including the introduction of Guimarães, whose eventual winner followed a move involving Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.
Saka exchanged passes with Odegaard, who found Rice inside the penalty area. Rice’s first-time backheel reached Guimarães on the edge of the box, and the Brazilian placed his shot into the corner. Arsenal subsequently had chances through Odegaard and Saka without adding another goal, but Leeds could not recover from the two-goal response.
