Gstaad Added Back Into 2000 Guineas Contender Mix After Stunning Newmarket Performance
Gstaad, the exciting two-year-old from the powerful John and Thady Gosden yard, has emerged as a serious 2000 Guineas contender after a stunning debut victory at Newmarket has left racing experts reassessing the colt's potential. The son of Frankel travelled like a group winner through the race before accelerating clear in the closing stages to win by three lengths, with the margin flattering his nearest pursuer.
Watch the highlights:
The performance caught the attention of racing enthusiasts and odds compilers alike, with bookmakers now offering quotes of around 16-1 for the colt to win next year's first Classic. However, connections face a decision whether to press on to Group One company immediately or give the horse more time to develop, with the Gosden stable known for their patience with promising colts.
Winning jockey Frankie Dettori, who partnered the colt on debut, said: "He's a very special horse. He relaxes beautifully, has a gorgeous action, and when I asked him to quicken, he responded instantly. He's not frank (the horse's sire) himself, but he's not far off. This is a proper horse." The Gosden team have been conservative with early season expectations but now face the dilemma every trainer dreams of.
Racing analyst Lee Mottershead commented: "We've seen Gosden horses improve significantly between two and three, but this one looks advanced enough to be competitive at the highest level immediately. The 2000 Guineas is wide open after the absolescence of previous market leaders, and Gstaad could emerge as the value play if connections commit." The horse's pedigree suggests he will excel over longer distances as a three-year-old, potentially making him a QIPCO Guineas and Derby double package.
Connections will now deliberate over whether to target the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October or wait until the 2000 Guineas campaign proper. The Gosden yard has a stellar record with Classic contenders, having prepared winners including Too Darn Hot and the legendary Enable. With the horse reportedly in excellent health and progressing daily, the racing world will watch with keen interest to see what path is chosen for this exciting prospect.
