Great Britain & Ireland Complete Record Walker Cup Comeback at Lahinch

Great Britain & Ireland won the Walker Cup for the first time since 2015 after completing the largest final-session comeback in the competition’s history at Lahinch Golf Club. BBC Sport reported that Dean Robertson’s team beat the United States 13½–12½ on Sunday, with Josh Hill delivering the decisive point on the final green.

The hosts began the closing singles three points behind after the United States swept all four Sunday morning foursomes. That turnaround had put the defending champions in command and left them needing 3½ points from the 10 afternoon matches to retain the trophy. Great Britain & Ireland instead took seven of the available singles points, losing only twice.

The recovery started at the top of the order. Stuart Grehan beat world number one amateur Preston Stout 2&1, Luke Poulter defeated Ethan Fang 3&1, and Tyler Weaver closed out Jay Leng Jr 4&3. Jack Whaley supplied the widest margin of the session, beating William Jennings 8&7, a result Golf Channel described as historic.

The United States remained close through wins for Ryder Cowan and Josiah Gilbert, while Niall Sheils Donegan halved with Kihei Akina. The finish tightened further when Eliot Baker defeated Walker Cup veteran Stewart Hagestad one up, winning the 18th with a birdie. Connor Graham then recovered from two down with two holes remaining against Miles Russell, finishing birdie-birdie to halve their match.

That left the overall score tied at 12½ points apiece, with Hill and Tyler Watts all square playing Lahinch’s par-five 18th. A halved match would have produced a 13–13 overall tie and allowed the United States to keep the trophy. Hill found a greenside bunker but got up and down, making the short putt required to win the hole and the match one up.

The victory ended five consecutive United States wins in the biennial men’s amateur contest and gave Great Britain & Ireland its 10th Walker Cup triumph. Sky Sports reported that the team had not lifted the trophy since its 16½–9½ victory at Royal Lytham & St Annes 11 years earlier. The Lahinch success came in the 51st edition of the event and was secured after the hosts had appeared to lose control during the morning session.
