Great Britain to face Germany in Davis Cup Finals after Ecuador sweep

Great Britain will face third seeds Germany in the Davis Cup quarter-finals after completing a 4-0 qualifying victory over Ecuador in London. BBC Sport reported the Finals draw in its updated coverage on September 22. The result sends Britain back to the season-ending knockout event for the first time since 2023, with Bologna hosting the competition from November 24 to 29.

Henry Patten and Neal Skupski secured qualification at the Copper Box Arena by beating Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-3 6-4 in the doubles. Their victory established an unassailable 3-0 lead, following singles wins for Toby Samuel and Arthur Fery. The British doubles team did not face a break point, despite Patten and Skupski not playing together on the ATP Tour.

Harry Wendelken then completed the sweep with a 6-2 6-3 win over Angel Veliz on his Davis Cup debut. He had been brought into the squad after Cameron Norrie withdrew on Friday, having experienced arm pain during practice. Britain were also without Jack Draper, who had ended his season, while injuries made Jan Choinski and Jacob Fearnley unavailable.

Samuel, also making his competition debut, recovered from losing the opening set to defeat Andres Andrade 4-6 6-4 6-1. The 24-year-old had climbed from outside the world's top 250 to 95th during the season and recently won his first Grand Slam match at the US Open. Fery beat Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-5 6-0 in only his second Davis Cup appearance.

Germany qualified by overcoming Croatia 3-1, with Alexander Zverev winning both his singles matches. Britain last reached the quarter-finals in 2023, when Serbia won their meeting 2-0. Speaking to BBC Sport, British captain Leon Smith welcomed qualification and highlighted the value of a strong doubles team against the leading nations.

The winner of Britain against Germany will meet either Austria or second seeds Spain. Hosts Italy, the three-time defending champions, face South Korea, who reached the knockout stage for the first time by beating India 3-1. The remaining quarter-final pairs fourth seeds the Czech Republic with Canada, champions in 2022. The Czechs advanced by eliminating the United States, leaving the record 32-time champions outside the quarter-finals for a second consecutive year.
