Ruthless Britain Sweep Australia Out of Billie Jean King Cup Contention
Great Britain pulled off a remarkable upset at Melbourne's John Cain Arena, sweeping past a favoured Australian side 3-0 in Billie Jean King Cup qualifying to book their place at September's finals in China.

Few gave Great Britain a fighting chance when they arrived in Melbourne for Billie Jean King Cup qualifying without four of their top players. Those absentees, three of whom opted to prioritise the European clay-court season, left Britain fielding what appeared to be a depleted squad against last year's semi-finalists.

The rankings meant nothing. Within two days, Australia were heading home.

Jodie Burrage and Harriet Dart, playing together for the first time as a doubles pairing, completed the rout on Saturday with a composed 6-3, 6-4 victory over Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez. Having recovered from an early break against their more experienced opponents, Burrage and Dart then reeled off five consecutive games to seize control of the first set and never let it go.

Speaking after the match, Dart told Nine: "We knew it was going to be an incredibly tough match. They're two great players and they play a lot of doubles, and it was our first time playing together. It's a bit crazy, actually, because we played pretty well, didn't we? But it's such an honour to represent GB and to be able to make the finals as well is kind of surreal."

The result was built on remarkable individual performances throughout the tie. Dart earlier upset Kimberly Birrell — ranked 173 in the world against Birrell's position inside the top 60 — in a come-from-behind singles win. Seventeen-year-old debutant Mika Stojsavljevic, ranked 219 places below her opponent Talia Gibson, produced two tight sets to claim another unlikely win.

With the tie locked at 2-0 going into the final day, only nine teams in BJK Cup history had ever mounted a comeback from that position. Australia could not become the tenth.

Emerson Jones, another 17-year-old brought in as an injury replacement, offered a glimpse of the future by beating Katie Swan 7-5, 6-3 in the dead rubber. But it was a small consolation for a nation that now faces a second consecutive year without a place in the eight-nation finals, which will be held in China in September.
