Grasso Delivers Spectacular Knockout-Submission Combo at UFC Seattle, Eyes Fourth Shevchenko Fight
Former champion earns Performance of the Night honors with devastating first-round finish over Maycee Barber, seeking closure in trilogy with current flyweight titleholder.

Alexa Grasso delivered one of the most spectacular finishes in recent UFC history at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, earning Performance of the Night honors with a devastating first-round combination knockout and submission victory over Maycee Barber that immediately sparked discussions about a fourth encounter with Valentina Shevchenko.

The former flyweight champion demonstrated the championship-level form that had been questioned during her recent struggles, dropping Barber with a massive punch before seamlessly transitioning to a rear-naked choke while her opponent appeared already unconscious.

I think it was both, Grasso explained when asked whether the finish should be classified as a knockout or submission, perfectly capturing the unique nature of her dominant performance against the highly-regarded contender.

Grasso exceptional display showcased her complete skill set while proving that her previous setbacks resulted from injury issues rather than declining abilities, as she had suggested throughout her challenging preparation period.

Of course its always hard to have two losses in a row, Grasso admitted during the post-fight press conference. Ive never experienced that before. But injuries are part of the journey. Healthy Alexa is very different than Alexa with injuries.

The 32-year-old Mexican fighter had endured a difficult period with three consecutive winless bouts against current champion Shevchenko and Natalia Silva, raising questions about whether she retained the elite-level capabilities that previously earned her championship success.

Saturday performance immediately silenced those doubts while demonstrating the dramatic impact that proper health and preparation can have on elite athlete performance levels throughout demanding fight camps.

I trained so well this fight camp. It was very, very tough. It was very hard. I wanted to get the finish, Grasso reflected on her preparation while acknowledging the specific tactical goals she pursued.

The former champion entered the bout with specific finishing intentions, prioritizing her Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills while maintaining confidence in her striking abilities that ultimately proved decisive.

Of course my jiu-jitsu game was the first point I wanted. I wanted to finish her, but of course my boxing is always there and Im super glad it worked, she explained while detailing her tactical approach.

The victory immediately renewed conversations about potential title contention, though Grasso acknowledges the challenge of generating interest for a fourth encounter with Shevchenko given their extensive history.

The rivals have now shared more than 70 minutes inside the octagon across three previous encounters, with Grasso maintaining a 1-1-1 record that leaves their rivalry tantalizingly unresolved.

That would mean the world to me. Dream come true, Grasso stated when asked about pursuing closure through a fourth fight with the current champion.

However, she recognizes that additional victories will be necessary to justify another championship opportunity following her recent inconsistent results.

I dont know how many fights I need to be a contender again, so Ill do my job and continuing training. I need I dont know how many wins to be in a championship fight, but thats the goal again, she acknowledged.

For her next appearance, Grasso expressed interest in returning at Noche UFC in September, a Mexican Independence Day celebration that holds special significance for her career development.

The event previously featured Grasso prominently, making her potential participation particularly meaningful as she attempts to rebuild momentum toward championship contention.

I would love UFC to bring Noche UFC to Guadalajara. That event started with me so it would truly mean the world to me to bring the best MMA event to my city where I train every single day, she proposed.

The spectacular Seattle performance demonstrated that Grasso remains capable of elite-level competition when properly prepared and healthy, suggesting that her championship window has not closed.

Her combination of striking power and submission skills creates unique problems for flyweight contenders while offering the tactical diversity necessary for championship-level success.

The question now becomes whether Grasso can maintain this performance level consistently while building the winning streak necessary to justify another encounter with Shevchenko.

For the UFC, the spectacular finish provides compelling content while potentially setting up one of the most anticipated rematches in womens mixed martial arts.

Grasso path back to title contention requires sustained excellence, but Saturday performance proved she retains the capabilities necessary to challenge the divisions elite competition.

As she awaits matchmaker decisions about her next opponent, Grasso has reestablished herself as a legitimate threat in the flyweight division while pursuing the closure that only a fourth Shevchenko encounter can provide.
