Gómez scores from halfway as Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0
Diego Gómez struck from 51 metres during Brighton’s derby victory. The Paraguayan’s effort came in an opening burst that produced three goals inside 10 minutes.

Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, with Diego Gómez scoring from near the halfway line. AS reported that the result took Brighton to 16 points from seven Premier League matches.

Watch the highlights:

The decisive spell arrived almost immediately. Jaydee Canvot scored an own goal in the fourth minute before Gómez spotted goalkeeper Walter Benítez away from his line. According to Sports Mole’s account, the Paraguay international received the ball inside the centre circle, adjusted his position with a touch and sent his shot over Benítez to double Brighton’s lead.

Sports Mole put the distance at 51 metres, making it the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney’s 58-metre effort for Everton against West Ham in November 2017. It was Gómez’s first goal of the season in his 10th appearance across all competitions. Yasin Ayari then scored in the 10th minute, leaving Palace three goals behind before they had settled into the match.

Charalampos Kostoulas added the fourth after the interval, having already supplied Ayari’s goal. Jack Hinshelwood completed the scoring. AS also reported that Jean-Philippe Mateta struck the crossbar and Eddie Nketiah missed a clear opportunity for Palace, whose chances did not produce a consolation goal.

The result extended a strong domestic run. The Football Faithful’s pre-match reporting, carried by Yahoo Sports, recorded Brighton’s three preceding league victories as 5-0 against Coventry City, 3-0 against Arsenal and 2-0 against Sunderland. Sunday’s score therefore made it four successive league wins without conceding. It also ended a derby drought: Brighton’s previous victory over Palace had come in February 2024.

Both clubs had played European matches on Thursday, but with different outcomes. Football365 reported that Brighton beat Kauno Zalgiris 4-0 at home in the Conference League, while Palace lost 3-2 at Lyon in the Europa League. Brighton followed their midweek victory with another clean sheet and five more goals; Palace returned from their European defeat to suffer another loss away from home.
