Gómez and Gross send Brighton second with 2–0 win over Brentford
Brighton moved into second place in the Premier League after Diego Gómez and Pascal Gross scored against Brentford. The visitors lost Igor Thiago to a first-half red card following a VAR review.

Brighton moved into second place in the Premier League with a 2–0 home victory over Brentford on Sunday, November 8. Diego Gómez and Pascal Gross scored before half-time at the Amex Stadium, while the visitors had Igor Thiago sent off. Sussex Express reported the result and Brighton’s rise in the table.

Watch the highlights:

Gómez broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a shot from outside the penalty area. Sussex Express described a left-footed finish from 25 yards, giving Fabian Hürzeler’s side an early advantage. Brighton’s official match centre also recorded Gómez as the opening scorer, with Gross later adding the second from the penalty spot.

Brentford’s task became harder eight minutes after the opener when Thiago was dismissed following an incident involving Chema Andrés. According to Sussex Express, referee Michael Oliver initially showed a yellow card before a video review led to a red for violent conduct. The publication reported the Premier League’s confirmation that the original booking had been upgraded, with Oliver explaining that Thiago had pushed his opponent in the face with force.

Gross converted the penalty in the 42nd minute, as recorded by Brighton’s match centre. The Guardian reported that Keane Lewis-Potter pulled Luka Vuskovic’s shirt to concede the spot-kick. That gave Brighton a two-goal cushion before the interval, and the final score remained unchanged through the second half.

Hürzeler had retained the starting side that won at Manchester City, according to Brighton and Hove News. That included Yasin Ayari, the scorer of the winner at the Etihad, and Charalampos Kostoulas in attack. Lewis Dunk captained a defence in front of Bart Verbruggen, with Gómez, Ayari and Maxim De Cuyper supporting Kostoulas.

The victory continued an already productive league campaign. Brentford’s official pre-match briefing recorded Brighton’s tally of 24 goals scored and seven conceded after nine matches, with the Seagulls entering Sunday in third place. They now head into the international break following another league win. Brighton’s published fixture list has their next Premier League match away to Hull City on November 22.
