Gloucester Edge Exeter in Thrilling West Country Derby to Dent Chiefs' Play-Off Hopes
Gloucester produced a clinical second-half fightback to claim a thrilling 24-21 victory over Exeter Chiefs in Saturday's West Country derby at Sandy Park, delivering a significant setback to their rivals' play-off ambitions.
Exeter appeared in control when they led 21-10 with twenty minutes remaining, centre Tom Wyatt having crossed twice for the hosts. However, Gloucester's pack momentum told in the closing stages, with tries from flanker Ruan Ackermann and hooker Jack Singleton edging the Cherry and Whites ahead.
Fly-half Lloyd Evans was immaculate with the boot, landing six from seven kicks at goal including the match-winning penalty on 74 minutes. His opposite number, Joe Simmonds, had a difficult afternoon, missing three conversions and a late drop-goal attempt that would have salvaged a draw.
Gloucester's director of rugby expressed immense pride in his side's response after their disappointing defeat to Bristol last week. "We showed tremendous character to dig ourselves out of that hole," he said. "The derby intensity was exactly what we needed heading into the final stretch of the season."
The result leaves Exeter fourth in the Gallagher Premiership standings, two points behind third-placed Sale with a challenging run-in that includes fixtures against league leaders Northampton and Bath. Gloucester climb to sixth, keeping their own play-off hopes alive with three wins from their last four matches.
Exeter's head coach acknowledged the Chiefs must rediscover their intensity quickly. "We created enough opportunities to win comfortably but paid the price for ill-discipline at crucial moments," he admitted. "Credit to Gloucester – they punished our errors ruthlessly."
