Gloucester Edge Exeter in Thrilling West Country Derby to Dent Chiefs' Play-Off Hopes
Gloucester claimed a dramatic 24-21 victory over Exeter Chiefs in a pulsating West Country derby, leaving the hosts' Premiership play-off ambitions hanging by a thread with three games remaining.

Gloucester produced a resilient second-half display to stun Exeter Chiefs 24-21 at Sandy Park on Sunday, a result that throws the Premiership play-off race wide open with the season entering its final stretch.

The visitors trailed 14-6 at half-time following tries from England hopefuls Tom Wyatt and Henry Slade, but a remarkable turnaround after the interval shifted momentum decisively. Gloucester's pack, inspired by number eight Ruan Ackermann, began dominating the collision area and earned a try from replacement hooker Sam Owen.

Fly-half George Barton, who missed three crucial kicks in the opening forty, redeemed himself with a composed 78th-minute penalty to give Gloucester their first lead at 22-21. The drama wasn't finished, however, as Exeter searched desperately for a match-winning score.

Chiefs captain Jack Innwood led from the front with 22 tackles and numerous carrying yards, but his side's ill-discipline proved costly—conceding 14 penalties throughout. Gloucester full-back Jonny May sealed the upset with a intercept try in the closing moments, converted by Barton for a conclusive 24-21 margin.

Exeter now sit seventh in the table, two points outside the play-off positions with fixtures against Sale, Bristol, and Leicester remaining. 'It's a tough one to take,' Innwood admitted post-match. 'We had control at half-time but they turned the tide. These next three weeks become must-win now.'

Gloucester's victory lifts them to sixth place, maintaining realistic hopes of a top-four finish. Director of Rugby George Skivington praised his side's character: 'To come here and win like that shows how far we've come. The lads never stopped believing.' The Cherry and Whites face London Irish, Newcastle, and Bath to close the season.
