Gloucester Edge Exeter to Dent Chiefs Play-Off Hopes in West Country Derby
Gloucester dealt a significant blow to Exeter Chiefs' Premiership play-off hopes with a hard-fought 24-19 victory in a thrilling West Country derby at Kingsholm Stadium.
The Cherry and Whites crossed for two tries through lock forward Ruan Schroff and wing Jake Kedembe, with fly-half Gareth Anscombe contributing 14 points with the boot. Captain Lewis Ludlow led the defensive effort brilliantly as Gloucester held on for a famous victory.
Exeter, who started the weekend fifth in the table, responded with tries from hooker Dan Shewana and replacement scrum-half Sam Maullin. Santiago Berarte converted both tries and added a penalty, but it wasn't enough to prevent their fifth defeat in six matches.
Gloucester's victory moves them up to seventh in the standings, five points behind fourth-placed Sale Sharks. Director of Rugby George Skivington praised his side's intensity: "That was exactly what we needed. The boys rolled their sleeves up when it mattered."
Exeter's defeat leaves them with work to do in the final rounds of the regular season. "Our play-off fate is no longer in our own hands," admitted head coach Ali Hepworth. "We need help now and we've got to keep fighting."
