Gloucester beat Bath 23-5 to end Kingsholm derby drought
Gloucester defeated Bath 23-5 at Kingsholm to record their first home league win over their rivals since April 2022 and maintain their position at the top of the Premiership. According to BBC Sport's match report, the hosts built the victory on a defensive effort that held Bath to one try despite sustained pressure and a period with only 13 players.
Watch the highlights:
The opening half tested Gloucester's resistance before they established control on the scoreboard. Thorley was sent to the sin-bin in the 21st minute and C. Knight followed seven minutes later, leaving the home side two players short for part of the half. Bath repeatedly attacked close to the Gloucester line, but the hosts limited the damage and reached the interval with a 9-5 advantage.
George Barton supplied all nine of Gloucester's first-half points through three penalties. Bath's response came shortly before the break, when Kepu Tuipulotu scored from a driving maul. That brought the visitors within four points, but it remained their only score of the match. Gloucester also had Joseph sin-binned in the 46th minute, adding another spell of defensive work with a reduced team.
Freddie Thomas gave Gloucester more breathing room with a try beneath the posts midway through the second half. Max Llewellyn then crossed with two minutes remaining to complete the scoring of tries for the hosts. Barton converted both, taking his personal contribution to 13 points and helping Gloucester turn their narrow half-time lead into an 18-point winning margin.
The result followed Gloucester's draw with Champions Cup holders Bordeaux seven days earlier. BBC Sport reported that George Skivington had described the Bath fixture as his side's biggest game of the season. Gloucester delivered the win without injured captain Dewi Lake and centre Seb Atkinson, ending a wait for victory over Bath stretching back to their 64-0 success more than four years ago.
For Bath, defeat extended their losing run to three matches across all competitions. Their evening also included injuries to full-back Santiago Carreras and flanker Guy Pepper. The BBC report did not specify the severity of either injury. While Gloucester retained their early-season league leadership, Bath left Kingsholm with both another defeat and uncertainty over two players.
