Glenn Irwin joins GRYD BMW project after difficult 2026 BSB season
Glenn Irwin has outlined the difficulties behind his 2026 season after securing a GRYD Racing BMW ride. He will partner Storm Stacey in the team's 2027 BSB debut.

Glenn Irwin has described the difficulties behind his 14th-place finish in the 2026 British Superbike Championship as he prepares to join GRYD Racing's BMW programme. BBC Sport NI reported on October 20 that the Northern Ireland rider sees the confirmed move as an opportunity to recover after a season disrupted by crashes, injuries and technical problems.

The 36-year-old struggled to find consistency with Ducati's new Panigale V4R, although his campaign included a Knockhill podium and success at the North West 200. A two-time BSB runner-up, Irwin lost the 2023 title to then team-mate Tommy Bridewell by half a point. He told the BBC Bikes podcast that the latest season had brought doubts about both his performances and his future.

The North West 200 also influenced his decision. According to the BBC, Irwin wanted machinery suited to both British Superbikes and road racing, with BMW's record at the event adding to the attraction. He said improvement remained necessary to compete with younger riders, while expressing confidence that he could return to winning form.

The championship's official announcement confirms that Irwin and Storm Stacey will ride alpha Racing-prepared BMW M 1000 RR machines in GRYD's debut BSB season in 2027. Michael Laverty and David Eltherington co-own the team. Both recruits have won BSB races and bring previous BMW experience: Irwin last raced the manufacturer in 2019, while Stacey used its machinery in the 2025 championship.

GRYD's expansion will take it into four British categories. Alongside the new Superbike entry, its programme will include the Moto4 British Cup, National Superstock and British Sportbike championships. Laverty said the pairing combines experience with youth, while alpha Racing confirmed that its existing relationship with GRYD would extend into the team's BSB operation.

Stacey said the coming technical-rule changes left uncertainty about the competitive picture for 2027. He nevertheless welcomed the BMW package and the chance to exchange knowledge with Irwin. The confirmed line-up and technical partnership establish GRYD's plans, but both riders' comments acknowledged the work still required before the new season.
