Glamorgan Wicketkeeper Chris Cooke to Retire After 2026 Season
Glamorgan wicketkeeper-batter Chris Cooke will retire at the end of the 2026 season after 16 years with the county. The 40-year-old former captain has compiled more than 14,000 runs across first-class, T20 and one-day cricket.

Glamorgan wicketkeeper-batter Chris Cooke will retire at the end of the 2026 season, bringing a 16-year county career to a close. BBC Sport reported that the 40-year-old, a regular across formats for much of his time in Wales, announced the decision with Glamorgan entering the final stage of their County Championship campaign.

Watch the highlights:

Cooke has scored 8,766 runs in 166 first-class matches at an average of 38.78. He has added 3,004 runs in T20 cricket and 2,616 in the one-day format. After taking over the wicketkeeping duties from Mark Wallace in 2017, Cooke served as Glamorgan captain from 2019 to 2021 and led the team during a narrow miss on Championship promotion in 2019.

Born in Johannesburg, Cooke played briefly for Western Province before moving to the United Kingdom and appearing in club cricket in Hampshire and the Midlands. He made his Glamorgan debut in 2011, initially operating as a T20 specialist and boundary fielder. His county career began dramatically when he hit sixes from his second, third and fourth deliveries.

Cooke established himself in Glamorgan's Championship side in 2013 and was part of the team that reached the YB40 final that year. He also contributed to the county's 2025 Championship promotion. His individual landmarks include an unbeaten 205 against Surrey at the Oval in 2021 and Glamorgan's fastest T20 century, struck from 38 balls against Middlesex in 2023.

He shared a county-record partnership of 461 with Sam Northeast against Leicestershire in 2022 and jointly holds Glamorgan's record of nine dismissals in a first-class match. Cooke has remained influential in 2026, scoring a Championship century that helped set up a victory over Surrey and making 44 from 15 balls in a decisive T20 contribution against Lancashire at Blackpool.

Cooke told Glamorgan he felt pride and sadness about retiring, while expressing gratitude for fulfilling his ambition of playing professional cricket and making Wales his home. Director of cricket Mark Wallace described him as the finest keeper-batter in the county's history. Alex Horton, Will Smale, Henry Hurle and Harry Wallace are among Glamorgan's wicketkeeping options, with the county fourth in the Championship table before its final six matches.
