Former Georgia captain and Dundee midfielder Giorgi Nemsadze dies aged 54
Giorgi Nemsadze, the former Georgia captain and Dundee midfielder, has died at the age of 54, BBC Sport reported. Dinamo Tbilisi, the club where his playing career both began and ended, announced his death in a Facebook statement. The BBC report said he died of a heart attack, as tributes recognised his contribution to Georgian football at club and international level.
Watch the highlights:
Nemsadze made 69 appearances for Georgia and served as captain of the national side. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze was among those paying tribute, expressing sorrow at his death and describing it as a major loss for the country's football. In the statement carried by the BBC, Kobakhidze highlighted Nemsadze's leadership, professionalism and determination, alongside the distinctive style with which he represented Georgia and his clubs.
His playing career included spells with Hamburg, Trabzonspor, Grasshoppers, Reggiana and Locomotive Tbilisi before he moved to Dundee in 2000. That record took him through clubs in Germany, Turkey, Switzerland and Italy as well as his homeland, before the three-year Scottish spell for which Dundee supporters would later recognise him with a place in the club's hall of fame.
Nemsadze arrived at Dundee during Ivano Bonetti's time as manager, an era that also brought Argentina striker Claudio Caniggia to the club. The midfielder spent three years there, with his contribution formally recognised through his hall of fame induction in 2010. His time in Scotland formed part of a club career that ultimately brought him back to Dinamo Tbilisi.
His involvement with football continued beyond playing. Nemsadze spent a year as Dinamo's sporting director before moving into coaching, working with young players in Georgia and subsequently managing Shevardeni Tbilisi, Dila Gori and Dinamo. Those roles extended his association with the Georgian game from international captaincy into the development of players and the management of senior teams.
Dinamo's announcement therefore marked the loss of a figure connected to the club in several capacities: player, sporting director and coach. The tribute from Georgia's prime minister also recognised that broader career, citing both Nemsadze's national-team service and his representation of clubs at home and abroad.
