Georgia Hunter Bell Targets Zurich 800m Showdown After European Gold
Georgia Hunter Bell will test herself against Audrey Werro, Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol in a paced 800m in Zurich after adding the European 1500m title to her remarkable season.

Georgia Hunter Bell is preparing to face Audrey Werro, Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol over 800 metres in Zurich next week, extending a season in which she has collected major titles at two distances. The Guardian reports that the British runner will enter a fast, paced race against the three athletes who filled the 800m podium in Birmingham.

Watch the highlights:

Hunter Bell arrives at the meeting after winning the European Championship 1500m title on Sunday. That result followed her Commonwealth gold over 800m and her world indoor crown at 1500m earlier in the season. Although she has not set a personal best this year, she told the newspaper that the sequence of victories may still make this her best campaign.

The Zurich field carries particular interest because Werro has run 1 minute 53.80 seconds this season, the third-fastest women's 800m time in history. Jarmila Kratochvilova's world record of 1:53.28 has stood since 1983. The Guardian reports that some observers believe the pace and quality of the field could bring that mark into view, although no outcome is being assumed.

For Hunter Bell, the race will be her first paced 800m of the season. She said she was excited to join the leading specialists after watching Werro, Hodgkinson and Broeders-Bol occupy the podium in Birmingham. Her recent results give the Zurich appearance added weight, but it will require a different race pattern from the championship contests she has already won.

The competition may extend beyond Zurich. Hunter Bell said she and the leading trio have discussed arranging a race with world champion Lilian Odira, creating what she called a potential big-five meeting before the end of 2026. She described the exchanges between the runners as competitive but respectful, with athletes encouraging one another to enter the same events rather than avoiding direct contests.

The Guardian identified next month's Ultimate Championships in Budapest as the most likely opportunity for all five runners to meet. A first prize of $150,000, reported as £110,000, will be available there. Hunter Bell said the leading athletes believe they can beat one another while retaining mutual respect, making the remaining 800m races a significant closing test in an already successful season.
