Georgia Bulldogs Drop First SEC Series but Retain Conference Lead
The Georgia Bulldogs may have lost their grip on perfection, but they have not lost their grip on first place.
Georgia dropped its first SEC series of the season this weekend, falling two games to one against the Florida Gators at home. The Bulldogs allowed 21 runs across the two losses, including a 13-7 defeat in Sunday's rubber match. Despite the setback, Georgia (29-8 overall, 11-4 SEC) remains the team to beat in the conference.
"We struggled today on the mound and getting big hits when we had the opportunities," Bulldogs manager Wes Johnson said after Sunday's loss.
The series outcome did little to dent Georgia's standing. The Bulldogs still own the SEC's best conference record and have built enough of a cushion that a single series loss does not undo their work. Florida, meanwhile, climbed to 27-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play with the series win.
The weekend produced several notable results across the conference. Texas A&M took two of three from Texas in a battle of top-five teams before weather forced the cancellation of Sunday's finale. South Carolina swept Missouri on the road, while Oklahoma edged Vanderbilt 6-5 on Saturday for a crucial road series win.
Tennessee continued its surge by handing Mississippi State a second consecutive SEC sweep. Ole Miss moved up the standings after completing a home sweep of LSU, and Arkansas earned a statement road sweep of Alabama. Auburn secured a 2-1 series win over Kentucky with a shutout victory on Sunday.
Looking at the updated standings as of April 13, Georgia leads at 11-4 in conference play, followed by Texas A&M at 9-5. Florida sits third at 9-6, with Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, and Arkansas all tied at 8-7 — creating a tightly packed middle tier that will make the race for seeding fascinating down the stretch.
With 176 items tracked across multiple RSS sources and existing articles in the system, the SEC race continues to deliver weekly drama. Georgia remains in control, but the conference has shown it can knock off even the best.
