George Hill Puts Yorkshire in Control Against Hampshire
Yorkshire set Hampshire 278 to win before reducing the hosts to 106-3 by stumps on day three at the Utilita Bowl. George Hill contributed with bat and ball to leave Yorkshire seven wickets from victory.

Yorkshire moved into a strong position in their County Championship relegation contest with Hampshire, setting the hosts 278 to win before reducing them to 106-3 at the close of day three at the Utilita Bowl. BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said Hampshire require another 172 runs on the final day while Yorkshire need seven wickets.

Watch the highlights:

George Hill was central to Yorkshire's advantage. After taking 5-29 in Hampshire's first innings, the all-rounder made 37 and shared a 58-run ninth-wicket partnership with Dom Bess. Their stand helped Yorkshire reach 301 in their second innings after the visitors had made 173 and Hampshire replied with 197.

Yorkshire began the day 111 runs ahead after Hampshire had taken five late wickets on the previous evening. Scoring remained slow on a dry surface and a sluggish outfield, but the visitors steadily extended the target beyond Hampshire's initial hopes. Matthew Revis occupied 62 balls for 16 before Andrew Neal bowled him.

Captain Jonny Bairstow, who had hurt his hand while keeping and did not take the gloves later in the day, added momentum alongside James Wharton and Hill. Neal also bowled Bairstow, while Felix Organ dismissed Wharton with Ali Orr taking the chance at short leg. Organ later removed Hill, then Bess was caught down the leg side after a further 18 runs had been added. Organ finished with 4-59.

Hampshire initially settled into the chase, but Yorkshire took three important wickets before stumps. Hill bowled Orr with a delivery at the top of off stump, Ben Coad induced Nick Gubbins to edge to slip, and Adam Lyth struck with his first ball when Jake Lehmann's attempted drive looped to second slip. Toby Albert, unbeaten on 36, and Tom Prest then guided Hampshire to the close without further damage.

The final day carries significant implications at the bottom of Division One. The BBC report said a Hampshire victory would leave the county one point behind Yorkshire and safety. A Yorkshire win, by contrast, could extend their advantage over the relegation zone to 36 points. With Hampshire pursuing 172 more runs and Yorkshire searching for seven wickets, both teams retain a direct route to a result.
