Gauff and Rybakina Complete Loaded US Open Quarter-Final Field

BBC Sport reported that fourth seed Coco Gauff produced her strongest performance of this year's US Open to beat fellow American Iva Jovic 6-1, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows. The victory returned the 22-year-old former champion to the New York quarter-finals for the first time since she won the title in 2023 and completed a notable last-eight field: the tournament's top six women's seeds all advanced for the first time since 1998.

The scoreline did not reflect the physical opening. Gauff and the 18-year-old Jovic exchanged breaks during the first three games, which lasted more than 17 minutes and contained 24 points. Gauff took control with another break for 3-1, then won 13 of the final 15 points to finish the first set in 33 minutes. Jovic had come through a match of more than three hours against Alexandra Eala in the previous round.

Jovic made the second set more competitive, saving four break points and finding more winners before Gauff converted a fifth opportunity for a 3-2 lead. The teenager broke back immediately, but Gauff's movement and consistency eventually decided the contest. Afterward, Gauff praised Jovic's ability and said she expected the two Americans to meet many more times.

Gauff will face French Open champion Mirra Andreeva on Wednesday as she continues her pursuit of a third Grand Slam singles title. According to the BBC, Gauff can also rise to world number one by winning the US Open. She and Andreeva are among five major champions in the quarter-final draw, which also includes Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen.

Elena Rybakina secured another place in the last eight by beating two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 in 66 minutes on Louis Armstrong Stadium. The second seed hit seven aces and 29 winners, conceded only four points on her serve and faced just one break point. Osaka said after the match that she had been dealing with pain in her leg.

Rybakina will next play Zheng, who recovered from 5-0 down in the opening set of her fourth-round match before defeating former champion Iga Swiatek. Rybakina is also within one win of the top ranking: the BBC reported that reaching the semi-finals would make the reigning Australian Open champion world number one for the first time, regardless of whether Aryna Sabalenka successfully defends the title.
