Gateshead face unpaid wages and survival fears as takeover stalls
Gateshead's financial crisis has deepened, with players and staff unpaid this month while a proposed takeover remains stalled. BBC Sport reported on 5 November that the National League club needs fresh investment following director Mark Nellist's resignation and withdrawal of financial support in September. Supporters are now expressing fears for the club's survival.
Watch the highlights:
The obstacle to a sale centres on competing ownership claims described by prospective buyer Flacks Group. In an open letter covered by BBC Sport on 30 October, the American investment company said it had learned that Shoreline Limited had agreed to purchase Gateshead from the existing owners in March. That earlier agreement has complicated its own attempt to complete a takeover.
According to Flacks Group, Shoreline subsequently filed court documents seeking confirmation that its purchase agreement was no longer valid. Flacks said it therefore sought written assurance that Shoreline would relinquish any ownership claim, so its own acquisition would not face a dispute. The company said the requested confirmation had not been provided, leaving it unable to proceed in the circumstances.
Flacks warned in that letter that it expected to withdraw reluctantly unless the issue could be resolved. It also said it was engaging with the Independent Football Regulator in pursuit of a solution. Those statements describe the prospective buyer's position; they do not establish that the ownership dispute has been settled or that the takeover has been completed.
The financial uncertainty accompanies a severe downturn on the pitch. Gateshead have four points from 15 league matches, have lost nine consecutive league games and sit 13 points from safety. Ben Clark remains in interim charge after Lee Cattermole was dismissed on 4 October, according to the BBC's latest report.
A rearranged home league match against Tamworth has also been postponed because two other major events were scheduled at Gateshead International Stadium on the same day. The club has not staged a home league fixture since 3 October. Local MP Mark Ferguson spoke to the Independent Football Regulator on Wednesday as efforts continued to secure a resolution.
