Gateshead takeover stalls as MP raises club's future with regulator
A disputed takeover has left Gateshead facing financial uncertainty, with delayed wages and a shortage of home fixtures adding pressure. Local MP Mark Ferguson has spoken to the Independent Football Regulator.

Gateshead's future remains uncertain after a proposed takeover encountered a legal obstacle, with local MP Mark Ferguson raising the club's position with the Independent Football Regulator. BBC Sport reported that Ferguson, who represents Gateshead Central and Whickham, spoke to the regulator on Wednesday as financial problems compounded the team's struggles at the bottom of the National League.

Watch the highlights:

The club's funding difficulties intensified when Nellist withdrew financial support at the end of September, according to the BBC. Payments to players and staff were delayed while Gateshead sought new investment. Flacks Group initially supplied money to cover wages, but the American group said in an open letter last week that its planned acquisition was close to falling apart.

Flacks Group attributed the impasse to uncertainty involving another prospective buyer, Shoreline Limited. In its account, Shoreline had attempted to buy Gateshead in March before filing court documentation four months later stating that its agreement was no longer valid. Flacks said it could not proceed without a response from Shoreline confirming it was no longer interested in purchasing the club.

The financial strain has coincided with a prolonged gap in home league fixtures. Gateshead have not hosted a league match since October 3, the BBC reported. A rearranged meeting with Tamworth scheduled for Saturday was also postponed after a clash emerged with two other large events at the International Stadium. BBC Sport said the club was believed to owe more than £200,000 to HMRC.

Results have offered little relief. Cattermole was dismissed on October 4, with Ben Clark taking interim charge. Clark secured his first victory at the seventh attempt on Tuesday against Stoke City Under-21s in the National League Cup. However, his side have lost all three league matches under him and suffered a 5-0 FA Cup replay defeat by eighth-tier Stafford Rangers.

Gateshead are 13 points from safety, but the immediate concern extends beyond avoiding relegation. Ferguson stressed the urgency of finding a resolution, while supporters voiced concern about securing a more stable future. The takeover remained unresolved in the BBC's report, leaving the club waiting for a way through its ownership and funding difficulties.
