Gateshead takeover stalls as financial pressure threatens club’s future
Gateshead's proposed takeover is at risk of falling through amid a dispute over an earlier attempt to buy the club, leaving the National League side facing an uncertain financial future. BBC Sport reported on Thursday that prospective buyer Flacks Group had warned it could not proceed without clarification from another interested party.
Watch the highlights:
Flacks Group initially supplied money to cover wages after financial support from Nellist ended in late September. Payments to players and staff had been delayed while the club sought investment. In an open letter issued last week, the American group said its planned acquisition was now close to collapse because of the unresolved position of Shoreline Limited.
According to the account in that letter, Shoreline had attempted to purchase Gateshead in March before filing court documents four months later stating that its agreement was no longer valid. Flacks Group said Shoreline had not answered requests to confirm it was no longer pursuing the club. Those claims explain the prospective buyer's position; they do not establish that the takeover has definitively ended.
The financial pressure has been compounded by a lack of home league fixtures. Gateshead have not hosted one since 3 October, and a rearranged match against Tamworth scheduled for Saturday was postponed because two other major events were taking place at the International Stadium. BBC Sport also reported that the club was believed to owe HMRC more than £200,000, rather than presenting that amount as a confirmed debt.
Results have offered little relief. Since Cattermole was dismissed on 4 October, interim manager Ben Clark has overseen three league defeats. His first victory came in his seventh match in charge, against Stoke City Under-21s in the National League Cup on Tuesday. Gateshead also lost an FA Cup replay 5-0 to eighth-tier Stafford Rangers, ending another potential source of income.
With Gateshead bottom of the National League and 13 points from safety, concern now extends beyond relegation. Mark Ferguson, the MP for Gateshead Central and Whickham, spoke to the Independent Football Regulator on Wednesday. He said the club's future remained uncertain and urged those able to help secure a resolution to act urgently.
