Gareth Southgate says he cannot see a Premier League coaching return
Gareth Southgate says he cannot envisage returning to Premier League management, describing a change in his relationship with football since leaving the England job. In an interview with The Amol Rajan Connection, reported by BBC Sport, the former national-team manager said experiences outside the sport had become an important part of his life.
Watch the highlights:
The 56-year-old has not managed a team since resigning after England lost the Euro 2024 final to Spain. He also led the country to the Euro 2020 final. His most recent club-management role was at Middlesbrough, where he spent three years in charge from 2006, well before his spell leading the senior national side.
Asked whether he would consider managing in the Premier League again, Southgate said: “I don't see a scenario where I do that.” His comments set out his current outlook rather than a new coaching appointment. He explained that his enthusiasm had diminished towards the end of his time with England, when even victories brought satisfaction for only a few minutes.
Southgate said he had watched little football since leaving the role. He attended the FA Cup final to see Crystal Palace, the team he supports, win their first trophy, but said he had not visited a football ground since. That reduced involvement accompanied a broader change in his desire to work in the game, he told the programme.
Away from management, Southgate has worked in the media and served as a visiting lecturer at Harvard Business School in Boston. Earlier this year, he presented a BBC documentary exploring challenges facing young men and boys across the United Kingdom. Those activities have formed part of a period in which he has pursued interests beyond the weekly demands of football results.
He said decades in the sport had tied his sense of identity to winning or losing on a Saturday. By contrast, he described enjoying opportunities to meet politicians and people working in media, learn about leadership in different settings and travel. For now, his account of life after England points towards continued exploration outside management, with no Premier League comeback in his stated plans.
