Gakpo faces ankle scan as Fernandes and Dorgu join injury list

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is due to undergo an ankle scan on Monday after coming off early in the Netherlands' 2-1 Nations League victory over Serbia. BBC Sport reported that Gakpo, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and United team-mate Patrick Dorgu had all suffered injury problems affecting their involvement in the current international window.

Gakpo left Sunday's game after 17 minutes, appearing in discomfort and holding the lower part of his right leg. Netherlands coach Xavi Hernández identified the problem as an ankle injury but said the scan would provide more information. The extent of the injury had not been established in the report. Gakpo had begun the club season with two goals and four assists from six appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.

Fernandes was absent from Portugal's squad for Sunday's match against Norway after playing in Thursday's win over Wales. Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said the midfielder had arrived with an injury from Manchester United and played against Wales despite being in pain. Jesus also said Fernandes had been keen to take part but had not performed at his usual level. Dorgu, meanwhile, limped off after 30 minutes of Denmark's 2-0 win over Wales on Sunday.

Liverpool were already dealing with another fitness concern after Alexander Isak withdrew from Sweden duty because of a minor thigh injury. Isak had completed the full match and scored in Friday's 2-1 Nations League win against Romania. According to the BBC, he will miss Sweden's remaining three fixtures in this window and be assessed by his club's medical staff.

Other Premier League clubs have also been affected. Arsenal's Kai Havertz went off after being caught on the knee by Quinten Timber during Germany's draw with the Netherlands on Thursday. Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey appeared to sustain a muscle injury in the same match. Sunderland defender Dan Ballard later suffered a hamstring injury in Northern Ireland's 1-0 win over Georgia, with manager Michael O'Neill confirming he would miss the national side's remaining games in the window.

The injuries have come during an expanded international break. BBC Sport reported that the first window of the 2026-27 men's season now spans three weeks across late September and early October, with four matches per country instead of two. The traditional separate October break has been removed, making this window a week longer than usual.
