FSU Basketball Completes Remarkable Turnaround Under Luke Loucks
First-year coach Luke Loucks transformed Florida State from ACC basement predictions to a program on the rise, winning 10 of 13 final games.

When Luke Loucks accepted his first head coaching position at Florida State just twelve months ago, the basketball world had minimal expectations. Transitioning from the NBA to college basketball with only weeks to assemble a staff and evaluate a roster composed primarily of mid-major transfers, most experts predicted the Seminoles would finish dead last in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Those predictions could not have been more wrong.

Loucks delivered a stunning proof of concept in his inaugural season, guiding Florida State to a remarkable late-season surge that saw the team win 10 of its final 13 games. The Seminoles came within inches of defeating Duke in the ACC Tournament, transforming from a program in question to one that has people across the country taking notice.

The turnaround has been so dramatic that Loucks revealed a complete reversal in recruiting dynamics. We get a lot of calls from a lot of different people, Loucks explained to Tallahassee media at his end-of-season press conference. Especially when you start gaining steam and winning games and building a real program that people want to be a part of. Currently, you have agents reaching out to us, and not vice versa.

This newfound success comes with both opportunity and challenge as the offseason begins. The Seminoles must replace six graduating seniors, including versatile point guard Robert McCray V, who served as the team primary floor general throughout the season. Additionally, several other players have entered the transfer portal, creating significant roster turnover.

Among the notable departures are sophomore guard Martin Somerville, who emerged as FSU sixth man and second-best ball handler behind McCray. Somerville departure is particularly significant given his clutch performances, including a 23-point outburst against Virginia Tech and seven assists in the ACC Tournament opening round. Guards Cam Miles and Xavier Osceola, along with forwards Shah Muhammad and Alier Maluk, have also entered the portal.

Loucks remains strategic about his approach to roster reconstruction through the transfer portal, which officially opened on April 7th. I could see anywhere from three to five portal pickups, Loucks stated. Some of that will be dependent on how much money I can raise. I am not just going to fill a team with players just to fill a team with players. You have to bring in impactful players that can help you win, and that are about the right things.

The head coach measured approach reflects lessons learned from his successful first season. Rather than simply filling roster spots, Loucks emphasizes finding players who align with the program culture and can contribute meaningfully to continued growth.

Florida State has already secured commitments from three four-star high school prospects: guards Martay Barnes and Jasen Lopez, along with forwards who should provide immediate depth. These additions, combined with strategic portal acquisitions, position the Seminoles to build upon their unexpected success.

With the transfer portal window closing on April 21st and the recruiting period ending April 30th, Loucks faces a compressed timeline to finalize his roster. However, given his remarkable first-year accomplishment of exceeding all expectations, few would bet against the coach continuing to prove doubters wrong.
