FSU Baseball Faces Major Adjustment After Bailey's Season-Ending Injury

Florida State baseball confronts a significant challenge as they navigate the remainder of the 2026 season without sophomore first baseman Myles Bailey, who suffered a season-ending right ankle injury during the Duke series on March 28.

Bailey's devastating injury occurred just as he was establishing himself as one of college baseball's rising stars. Through 26 games this season, the talented slugger had accumulated 33 RBIs while demonstrating marked improvement from his exceptional freshman campaign.

During his debut 2025 season, Bailey appeared in every FSU game and produced 56 RBIs, recording the second-highest totals in both RBIs and slugging percentage behind former Seminole Alex Lodise. "It's just an emotional disarray of thoughts when you watch an athlete and a person like that go through it. The character, the work ethic, and the way he applies it in-game, it's as good as I've seen," head coach Link Jarrett said following the March 29 surgery.

Jarrett's confidence in Bailey's abilities extends to professional evaluation. "To stick him on a Major League field at first base right now is not far-fetched. He could do that defensively, and we know the offense is just going to continue to grow," the coach observed.

"I'm going to have to feel it out. We try to get guys reps at third, short, and second so they're comfortable moving around, and I think most of our guys can play anywhere," Jarrett explained regarding the positional adjustments.

Redshirt senior Eli Putnam has assumed first base duties in the immediate aftermath of Bailey's injury. Putnam brings valuable experience from his 48 games at first base with Davidson College in 2024, providing institutional knowledge of the position's demands.

"When Myles is out, then you know that there's something drastic that has to change in the infield, just to equip the team to have a new first baseman, because he did such a good job there," Jarrett noted. "Eli [Putnam] is very good at first; he's played first, he's very comfortable there."

The timing of Bailey's injury coincides with FSU's most challenging stretch of competition. The Seminoles face No. 10 Virginia in a crucial top-ten matchup beginning April 3, followed by their traditional rivalry series against Florida starting April 7.
