Frylinck century puts Namibia 2-1 ahead of Ireland after 63-run win
Namibia moved 2-1 ahead in their five-match one-day international series against Ireland with a 63-run victory in Windhoek on Tuesday. Jan Frylinck scored 126 as the hosts reached 316-7, before Ireland were dismissed for 253 in 44.5 overs despite a century from Curtis Campher, according to BBC Sport's match report.
Watch the highlights:
The result leaves Ireland needing to win both remaining matches to take the series. The teams meet again on Friday and Sunday, with the tour forming part of Ireland's preparations for next year's World Cup qualifiers. For Namibia, Tuesday's victory secured the advantage with two games left after the opening two meetings had left the series level.
Namibia chose to bat after winning the toss, but their innings required rebuilding following two early wickets. Louren Steenkamp departed for 13 with the total at 33-1, and Malan Kruger's dismissal for 42 left the hosts 81-2. Frylinck and captain Gerhard Erasmus then added 101 for the third wicket, providing the partnership that underpinned Namibia's eventual total.
Erasmus contributed 54 alongside Frylinck's century, while Alex Volschenk added 36. Ireland's most successful wicket-takers were Andy McBrine, who returned 2-53, and Campher, who finished with 2-68. Namibia completed their full 50 overs with seven wickets down, setting Ireland a target of 317 and leaving the visitors with a substantial chase to regain the series lead.
Ireland's reply was also affected by an injury to captain Paul Stirling, who was unable to bat after hurting a finger while fielding. The tourists slipped to 56-4 before Campher's 106 from 86 deliveries gave the chase renewed momentum. His innings followed his two wickets with the ball, but Ireland continued to lose wickets and could not turn his contribution into victory.
Bernard Scholtz took 2-31, Ruben Trumpelmann 2-37 and Jack Brassell 2-72 as Namibia completed the win with 31 deliveries unused in Ireland's innings. Campher's hundred therefore ended in defeat, while Frylinck's earlier century proved the foundation of the winning total. Ireland now head into Friday's fourth match needing a victory to keep their chance of winning the series alive.
