Four clubs secure first-ever FA Cup first-round places
AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Berkhamsted, Plymouth Parkway and Sholing reached the FA Cup first round for the first time after Saturday's qualifying matches, BBC Sport reported. The four clubs secured places in Monday's draw, while ninth-tier Tadley Calleva kept their own hopes alive by earning a replay against Aldershot Town.
Watch the highlights:
Rushden & Diamonds defeated Morecambe 2-1 despite playing two divisions below their National League North opponents. The eighth-tier club, formed in 2011 following the demise of Rushden & Diamonds, have won five matches to reach this stage. Manager Elliot Sandy told BBC Radio Northamptonshire of his delight for the supporters, volunteers, players and coaching staff after the result secured the club's first appearance in the competition's main draw.
Berkhamsted also overturned a gap in league status, recovering from behind to beat Southend United 2-1 at Roots Hall. The seventh-tier side joined fellow first-round newcomers Plymouth Parkway and Sholing, who both won 2-0, with Sholing defeating SE Dons. Elsewhere, Wimborne Town beat Chelmsford City 1-0 to reach the first-round draw for the first time since 1982. Guiseley advanced with a 3-0 victory at Leiston, adding another seventh-tier team to the field.
Tadley Calleva have not yet secured qualification, but will be the lowest-ranked club represented in Monday's draw. The Hampshire side twice recovered from a goal down to draw 2-2 away to National League opponents Aldershot, backed by 883 travelling supporters. Their home replay on Tuesday will determine whether they can turn that result into a first-round place.
Other lower-league clubs also forced replays against National League opposition. Bury drew 1-1 with Harrogate Town before almost 5,000 spectators at Gigg Lane, while Stafford Rangers held Gateshead 1-1 and Leatherhead drew 3-3 with Yeovil Town. Gloucester City and Chesham United recorded goalless draws against Barrow and Forest Green Rovers respectively. Those ties leave several more qualification places unresolved ahead of Tuesday's replays.
Saturday's winners earned £9,375 each in prize money, according to BBC Sport, and can now be paired with League One or League Two clubs. The draw is scheduled for 18:35 BST on Monday, 19 October, with former FA Cup winners Martin Keown and Fara Williams making the selections. First-round matches are due to take place around the weekend of Saturday, 7 November.
