Former Teammates Suspended After Angels-Braves Bench Clearing Brawl
Jorge Soler and Reynaldo López each received seven-game suspensions following their involvement in Tuesday night's heated altercation at Angel Stadium.

Major League Baseball handed down suspensions Wednesday morning following Tuesday night's explosive confrontation between Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler and Atlanta Braves pitcher Reynaldo López.

Both players received seven-game suspensions along with undisclosed fines from MLB senior vice-president for on-field operations Michael Hill. The suspensions are currently on hold as both players appeal the league's decision.

The drama began early in Tuesday's game when Soler launched a two-run home run off López in the opening frame. When Soler returned to the batter's box for his second at-bat, López's 96-mph fastball found its mark, drilling the slugger in what appeared to be retaliation.

Tensions reached a boiling point in the fifth inning. López uncorked a wild pitch that sailed high and inside, nearly striking Soler in the head before glancing off catcher Jonah Heim's mitt. The near-miss was the final straw for Soler, who immediately began marching toward the mound.

"I asked him if everything was OK and the answer he gave me, I didn't like it," Soler explained through an interpreter. "That's why I went out there."

As the two former teammates faced off near the pitcher's mound, López raised his hands in what initially appeared to be a defensive gesture. However, the confrontation quickly escalated when both players began throwing punches. In a particularly aggressive moment, López used the baseball he was holding as a weapon, striking Soler's batting helmet with his right hand.

The sight of their stars trading blows sent both dugouts and bullpens emptying onto the field. In the chaos that followed, Braves manager Walt Weiss made the split-second decision to tackle his former player to prevent further escalation.

"I love Soler. We were teammates here," Weiss said. "But that's a big man, and so I just felt I've gotta get him off his feet because he's gonna hurt somebody. And so that was my instinct, just to get in there and get Jorge off his feet, yeah, because he was on a warpath."

The irony wasn't lost on anyone present that the two combatants had been teammates just months earlier. Both López and Soler wore Braves uniforms during the second half of the 2024 season, making their public altercation all the more surprising.

López later expressed regret over the incident, insisting through an interpreter that he never intended to hit Soler with any of his pitches. "It's just a shame, the situation and how things unfolded," he said. "On my part, there was never any intent to hit him at any point."

Soler, however, wasn't buying the explanation. With an impressive .609 batting average against López (14-for-23) including five home runs, he felt the pattern was clear. "At this level, you can't miss like that," he stated, referring to the dangerous high pitch.

Atlanta capitalized on the momentum shift, turning their 4-2 lead into a commanding 7-2 victory. The win improved their early season record while both suspended players begin their appeals process with the league office.
