Former Selector Suggests Captaincy Change at Mumbai Indians for IPL 2026
Kris Srikkanth believes Suryakumar Yadav should lead Mumbai Indians instead of Hardik Pandya, citing the T20 World Cup winner's fresh leadership credentials.

Former India selector Kris Srikkanth has proposed a significant leadership restructure at Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2026, suggesting that T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav should take over the captaincy from Hardik Pandya to revitalize the franchise's championship aspirations.

The five-time IPL champions face a complex leadership dynamic despite boasting one of the tournament's most star-studded lineups, featuring established internationals like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma alongside captain Hardik Pandya.

Mumbai Indians have endured a frustrating period since their last IPL triumph in 2020, with the captaincy transition from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya in 2024 failing to produce the desired results. The franchise finished last in 2024 before showing improvement with a playoff appearance in 2025, only to fall short in Qualifier 2 against Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings.

Srikkanth highlighted the unusual situation within the Mumbai Indians setup, where multiple World Cup-winning captains currently operate under Pandya's leadership.

"They have to come together again, the franchise owners and the team management with Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, and set this right again. They should ask Surya to lead this year to see if there is a change of luck," Srikkanth explained on his YouTube channel.

The former selector emphasized that Mumbai Indians possess the flexibility to implement such a change without immediate public announcement, allowing internal discussions to determine the optimal leadership structure.

"They can always appoint Surya as the captain anytime. They don't need to announce it right now," he added, suggesting a pragmatic approach to resolving the captaincy question.

Srikkanth described the current arrangement as uniquely challenging, noting that Pandya now leads players who were instrumental in India's recent T20 World Cup success under different captains.

"It's a funny situation. Hardik Pandya is a good captain. But, yes, they have two T20 World Cup-winning captains playing under him now. It's some internal policy within their setup that they have to sort out," he observed.

The former selector suggested that the most logical choice from an external perspective would be Suryakumar Yadav, given his recent success leading India to T20 World Cup glory and his established credentials within the Mumbai Indians system.

"From the outside, the obvious choice should be Suryakumar Yadav. But this might be a franchise policy," Srikkanth noted, acknowledging the complex internal dynamics that influence such decisions.

Perhaps most diplomatically, Srikkanth proposed that the resolution could emerge if Pandya voluntarily stepped aside to allow his teammate to lead.

"It's a strange situation, as Hardik played under Rohit and Surya to help India win the World Cup. Otherwise, Hardik should himself say no to captaincy and allow Surya to lead," he suggested.

The former selector envisions a scenario where Pandya approaches management directly: "He should say, 'Let Surya lead and I'll support'. That's one way of solving it."

Mumbai Indians will commence their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, providing the perfect stage to unveil their leadership approach for the new season.

The captaincy debate reflects broader questions about optimizing team dynamics and leadership structures in modern T20 cricket, where recent international success can significantly influence franchise decision-making processes.
