Flyers End Six-Year Playoff Drought With Dramatic Shootout Victory Over Hurricanes
Philadelphia clinches its first playoff berth since 2020 after a thrilling shootout win against Carolina, setting up a first-round showdown with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The long wait is finally over for Philadelphia Flyers fans.

Dan Vladar turned aside Carolina’s fourth shootout attempt, raised his arms in triumph, and was immediately swarmed by teammates as the final horn sounded on a 3-2 shootout victory over the Eastern Conference’s top seed. The win clinched Philadelphia’s first playoff spot since 2020, triggering a celebration six years in the making at a packed and raucous Wells Fargo Center.

“CLINCHED!” flashed across the big screen as orange-clad fans roared. Players skated to center ice and raised their sticks toward the crowd that hasn’t enjoyed a home playoff series since 2018.

Tyson Foerster delivered the decisive moment, scoring the only goal in the shootout after a back-and-forth battle between Vladar and Carolina’s Pyotr Kochetkov. The 24-year-old had been written off for the season after suffering an injury in early December that cost him 49 games, but he returned this month and came through when it mattered most.

“These guys in this room love each other,” said Owen Tippett, who played a key role in the rally from a 2-0 deficit. “It’s going to be a blast. But the job’s not done.”

The comeback was sparked by Matvei Michkov, whose goal in the second period ignited the rally. Trevor Zegras followed with a power-play tally to knot the game, sending it to overtime and ultimately the shootout.

First-year head coach Rick Tocchet, who played parts of 10 seasons in Philadelphia, has been the architect of the cultural shift. The Flyers leaned heavily on veteran leadership while developing one of the league’s most exciting young cores.

“I’m not nervous,” Tocchet said. “I’m excited for these guys.”

General manager Danny Briere, who resisted trading away young assets for veterans during the rebuild, has watched his patience pay off. Porter Martone, the 19-year-old rookie, has shown flashes of star potential alongside Michkov, giving the franchise two cornerstones to build around.

Philadelphia now turns its attention to the first-round matchup with Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins — a rivalry that never fails to deliver intensity. The Flyers close the regular season Tuesday against Montreal before the real work begins.

It’s the first playoff appearance for a franchise that last hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1975, a championship drought that ranks among the longest for any team with at least two titles. For one night, the focus was purely on celebration.

“I feel for them,” Tocchet said of the fans. “Hopefully this gives them a little bit of belief.”

The orange and black are back.
