Florida Panthers Force Decisive Game 7 with Overtime Thriller Against Toronto Maple Leafs
SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers forced a decisive Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory on Friday night at the FLA Live Arena. Carter Verhaeghe became the hero of the night, burying a rebound past Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov 2:34 into the extra period to send the series to a winner-take-all finale.
Watch the highlights:
The Panthers trailed 3-1 midway through the second period before mounting a remarkable comeback. Matthew Tkachuk sparked the rally with a power-play goal at 14:23 of the middle frame, and Aaron Ekblad equalized just 47 seconds later with a slapshot from the point that beat Samsonov blocker-side. The crowd of 19,250 erupted as the Panthers completed the comeback in regulation when Aleksander Barkov redirected a pass from Verhaeghe past Samsonov with 4:12 remaining in the third period.
Verhaeghe finished the night with two goals and an assist, while Barkov contributed a goal and two assists. Samsonov stopped 31 of 35 shots for the Maple Leafs, who received goals from Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander. Matthews opened the scoring at 6:42 of the first period with his seventh goal of the playoffs, and Marner gave Toronto a 2-1 lead in the second period before Nylander restored the two-goal cushion.
Panthers head coach Paul Maurice praised his team's resilience in the postgame press conference: "This group has shown incredible character all season, and tonight was another example. Down 3-1 on the road, in a hostile environment, we found a way. That's what championship teams do."
The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, must regroup quickly. "We had control of this game, but hockey is a funny game," said Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube. "We need to be ready for Game 7. There's no margin for error now." Samsonov is expected to start again in goal for Toronto in what promises to be an epic series finale.
Game 7 is scheduled for Sunday evening at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, with the winner advancing to face either the Carolina Hurricanes or New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM ET.
