Matt Fisher returned career-best figures of 6-25 as Yorkshire were bowled out for 82 on a remarkable second day against Surrey at The Oval. The collapse set Surrey a target of 185, and the hosts reached 27 without loss by stumps, leaving another 158 runs required. Yorkshire had first been dismissed for 185, with Dom Bess unbeaten on 44 and Tom Lawes taking four wickets for Surrey. That total soon looked imposing when Surrey's first innings ended at 83 in 30 overs. Jack White and Ben Coad took three wickets each, while George Hill claimed two, giving Yorkshire a first-innings advantage of 102.

Fisher then led Surrey's response with the ball against his former county. His six wickets reduced Yorkshire to 82 and marked the best bowling figures of his career, according to The Guardian's day-two report. Yorkshire's second-innings total still stretched the target to 185 because of their earlier lead, setting up a fourth-innings chase before the close.

Surrey's openers navigated the remaining overs without losing a wicket, reaching 27-0. The Guardian noted that it was the first time since 1950 that a day of first-class cricket at The Oval had included action from all four innings. The match remained unresolved at stumps, with Surrey needing 158 and Yorkshire still requiring 10 wickets.

There was another major bowling performance elsewhere in Division One. Henry Crocombe took a hat-trick and finished with five wickets as Essex lost seven wickets for six runs in 26 balls against Sussex at Chelmsford. Essex were dismissed for 177 after Sussex had made 275, while Sussex closed their second innings on 90-4 with a lead of 188.

At The Oval, however, Fisher's spell transformed a day that had initially swung sharply toward Yorkshire when Surrey were dismissed for 83. Surrey's wicketless start to the chase restored balance, but the target remained substantial after an extraordinary sequence of collapses. The result will be decided from a position in which both teams still have a clear route to victory.
