Fisher Takes Career-Best Six as 23 Wickets Fall at The Oval

Matt Fisher took a career-best 6-25 against his former county Yorkshire as 23 wickets fell on an extraordinary second day of the County Championship match at The Oval. BBC Sport reported that Surrey reached 27 without loss before bad light ended play, leaving them 158 more runs to chase a victory target of 185.

Yorkshire began the day on 133-7 after rain and bad light had cost 36 overs on Wednesday. Dom Bess made an unbeaten 44 from 88 balls and shared an eighth-wicket stand of 57 with Kuldeep Yadav, who scored 17. Tom Lawes removed the final two batters and finished with 4-36 as Yorkshire's first innings ended at 185.

Surrey then collapsed to 83 in 30 overs against a disciplined four-man seam attack. Jack White returned 3-14 and Ben Coad took 3-22, while George Hill claimed 2-17 and Matt Revis 2-19. Ollie Pope's 21 was Surrey's highest score, and he was the only member of the innings to pass 20.

Fisher briefly resisted with a six and a four before Coad dismissed him, but his largest contribution came when Yorkshire batted again. The Surrey seamer removed Adam Lyth and Sam Whiteman for ducks with successive deliveries, then bowled Jonny Bairstow before adding the wickets of Revis, Hill and Kuldeep. Yorkshire were dismissed for 82 in 28.5 overs.

Lawes, Dan Worrall and Auqib Nabi supported Fisher as Yorkshire's second innings fell away. Will Luxton top-scored with 29, while Bess made 17. Surrey openers Dom Sibley and Rory Burns then negotiated the closing passage without losing a wicket, with Sibley unbeaten on 15 when poor light stopped play.

According to BBC Sport, it was the first time since 1950 that parts of all four innings had been played on the same day in a first-class match at The Oval. Surrey and Yorkshire entered the fixture eighth and seventh in Division One respectively, making the remaining chase significant for both teams as they seek distance from the two relegation places.
