FIA reveal F1 rule tweaks aimed at encouraging 'more flat-out driving'
The FIA has announced significant Formula 1 rule changes for 2026 designed to promote overtaking and encourage drivers to push harder throughout races.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) unveiled a comprehensive package of Formula 1 regulation changes for the 2026 season, with the primary goal of creating more competitive racing and encouraging drivers to drive at the absolute limit.

Watch the highlights:

Key modifications include revised aerodynamic guidelines aimed at reducing turbulent air behind cars, making it easier for drivers to follow closely and attempt overtakes. The changes also address tire compounds, with new specifications designed to allow for more aggressive driving without excessive degradation.

FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem explained the rationale: "We want to see drivers pushing flat-out, not managing their races. These changes will reward commitment and skill, delivering the spectacle our fans deserve."

Technical Director Jan Monchaux added: "We've analyzed thousands of data points and worked extensively with teams to develop regulations that balance performance with sustainability while improving on-track action."

The announcement comes as F1 continues its push for more exciting racing, following feedback from fans and stakeholders. Overtaking numbers have been a key metric, and the new rules aim to increase wheel-to-wheel action significantly.

Teams have been given detailed technical guidelines to help them prepare for the transition, with pre-season testing scheduled to begin in February. Early reactions from drivers have been largely positive, with several noting the potential for more aggressive race strategies.

The changes represent the latest evolution in F1's ongoing efforts to balance technological innovation with competitive racing, as the sport seeks to maintain its position as the pinnacle of motorsport.
