Feyi-Waboso scan eases England injury fears but Toulouse trip ruled out
Immanuel Feyi-Waboso remains in contention for England’s November Nations Championship matches after an encouraging assessment of his hamstring injury, but will miss Exeter Chiefs’ Champions Cup visit to Toulouse on Sunday. BBC Sport reported that the winger’s scan had produced a positive prognosis, with no return date yet confirmed.
Watch the highlights:
Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter said medical staff had not given him reason to expect a lengthy absence. In comments reported by Planet Rugby, he explained that the scan showed relatively little and that Feyi-Waboso was performing well in physical testing. The club hopes treatment of his remaining symptoms will allow his condition to improve over the coming week.
Planet Rugby also reported that Exeter and England’s medical teams are discussing his recovery, with an England physiotherapist having examined both the scan and the player. Baxter emphasised that imaging and a player’s ability to move can present different pictures. He said the next steps would depend on whether Feyi-Waboso was functioning normally after a break or remained uncomfortable into next week. England has the final say on treatment under his enhanced international contract.
The 23-year-old left Exeter’s 34-28 Premiership victory over Newcastle 15 minutes into the second half. Voice Newspapers reported that he had started every league match for the Chiefs this season after missing this year’s Six Nations with a hamstring problem sustained in January. He also featured in all three of England’s summer Nations Championship fixtures, scoring against Fiji and Argentina.
His absence adds to Exeter’s shortage of wings for the Toulouse match. BBC Sport reported that Campbell Ridl, Olly Woodburn and Paul Brown-Bampoe are also unavailable. Tommy Wyatt started on the left against Newcastle, Ben Hammersley replaced Feyi-Waboso on the right and Sam Harris played at full-back. Baxter said he still had players with Premiership experience to draw on despite the depleted options.
Exeter’s schedule after Toulouse includes league meetings with Bristol Bears and Harlequins, Planet Rugby reported. Baxter described competing club and international needs as the medical discussions continue: Exeter want the winger available for important fixtures, while England are seeking his involvement in November. His recovery over the next several days will guide those conversations.
