Fernando Alonso stays with Aston Martin for 2027 alongside Lance Stroll

Fernando Alonso will remain in Formula 1 with Aston Martin in 2027, with the team confirming on Tuesday that Lance Stroll will also continue. Aston Martin said both drivers had extended their long-term contracts, keeping the partnership together for a fifth consecutive season and settling its race line-up beyond the current campaign.

Alonso, 45, told BBC Sport that confidence in his own pace was central to his decision. He said he still believed he could compete with other drivers and would find it difficult to watch races from home while feeling capable of doing better. His continued enjoyment of racing also helped persuade him to stay.

According to BBC Sport's interview, Adrian Newey was another major influence. Alonso wanted more time working with the designer after a difficult first season under the new regulations. He also expressed faith in changes at engine partner Honda, while acknowledging there was no guarantee that its problems would be fully resolved next year.

The team announcement sets out the experience Aston Martin will retain. Stroll is due to begin his 11th Formula 1 season in 2027, having made more than 200 starts and earned three podium finishes. Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023 and has since recorded eight podiums, including two second places, according to the team.

Executive chairman Lawrence Stroll said the drivers' experience and knowledge were valuable to the organisation, with improving performance remaining its immediate priority. Lance Stroll pointed to work taking place at Silverstone and said he believed the team had the people and resources to win. Aston Martin presented continuity as support for its development programme.

Alonso's decision comes despite his criticism of the 2026 cars. He told BBC Sport that energy management had made driving feel less natural, but said the sport's willingness to discuss improvements gave him hope. He left open the possibility of racing beyond 2027, without presenting that as a settled commitment to another season.
