Fernandes to remain Manchester United captain after criticism of Carrick
Bruno Fernandes will remain Manchester United captain and will not face disciplinary action for criticising Michael Carrick after the club's 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como, BBC Sport reports. The decision follows comments in which the midfielder questioned the team's tactics and said identifying and correcting problems was the responsibility of the head coach and his staff rather than the players.
Watch the highlights:
According to the BBC, there is disappointment inside Old Trafford about parts of Fernandes' remarks, but also sympathy for the circumstances in which he made them. The Portugal international completed 10 interviews after the match, despite having been substituted for Joshua Zirkzee midway through the second half. The report said his frustration was understood within the club given the nature of the defeat.
Retaining the captaincy does not settle whether Fernandes will play in Sunday's Premier League match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. BBC Sport said his selection remained uncertain. Carrick is scheduled to hold his pre-match news conference at 13:30 BST on Friday, when he is expected to face questions about the situation. The report said he would remain in charge for the Bournemouth fixture.
Fernandes' comments came eight days after defender Lisandro Martinez criticised director of football Jason Wilcox and United's summer recruitment. Former United striker Wayne Rooney addressed both episodes on the United Stand podcast, arguing that the players needed to accept responsibility for their performances instead of directing blame towards others. He said Martinez's earlier remarks risked damaging relations within the dressing room.
Rooney, a close friend of Carrick, also called on United's board to clarify the head coach's future. While acknowledging the questions being asked of Carrick, he urged him to defend his position more forcefully. Those remarks were Rooney's assessment of the situation; the BBC's report on Fernandes said the captain would not be punished for his post-match criticism.
The immediate distinction is between United's response to Fernandes' comments and Carrick's next team selection. The captaincy and disciplinary questions have been addressed in the BBC's reporting, while Fernandes' place against Bournemouth remains unresolved. Friday's news conference is the next scheduled opportunity for Carrick to discuss the aftermath of the Como defeat.
