Fernandes backs Carrick after United’s comeback win over Roma
Bruno Fernandes reaffirmed his support for Michael Carrick after Manchester United beat Roma 3-2. The Champions League comeback ended a nine-game winless run.

Bruno Fernandes reaffirmed his confidence in Michael Carrick after Manchester United recovered from two goals down to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday. Speaking to Amazon Prime, in comments reported by BBC Sport, the United captain said the victory was needed by the club and players rather than describing it as an effort to protect the manager’s job.

Watch the highlights:

United had to overturn an early deficit at Old Trafford. According to ANSA’s match report, Matías Soulé put Roma ahead in the 11th minute after receiving a pass from Rodrigo Mora. Donyell Malen then converted a penalty in the 18th minute, awarded for an Ayden Heaven handball, to leave the visitors two goals clear before the interval.

Fernandes reduced the gap with a retaken penalty in the 58th minute. ANSA reported that goalkeeper Devis Vásquez saved his initial attempt before Bryan Cristante cleared the ball, but the referee ordered another kick because Cristante had entered the area early. Fernandes scored at the second attempt. Bryan Mbeumo subsequently struck both posts with one effort as United pursued an equaliser.

Matheus Cunha completed the turnaround with goals in the 83rd and 86th minutes. He volleyed in the equaliser after Leonardo Balerdi failed to clear a cross, then scored the winner following a pass from Shea Lacey. ANSA also reported that Cunha was sent off late in the match. The final score gave United victory after Roma had led 2-0 at half-time.

Fernandes’ comments followed his public criticism of Carrick’s tactics after the defeat at Como and a subsequent spell on the bench. He said the manager retained authority over selection and that his own belief in Carrick, the coaching staff and his teammates had not changed. He also disputed media accounts of the relationship, BBC Sport reported.

The result ended United’s nine-match wait for a victory and was their second win in four Champions League fixtures, lifting them to 17th in the league-phase standings. Youri Tielemans said the players could support Carrick through their performances, while Kobbie Mainoo expressed relief that the winless sequence was over. Both spoke to Amazon Prime, according to BBC Sport.
