Fenerbahce overturn Liverpool lead as Muriqi seals 3-2 Champions League win
Fenerbahce twice came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-2 in the Champions League in Istanbul on Wednesday, with Vedat Muriqi heading the winner after Archie Brown had made it 2-2. BBC Sport's match report said the result ended Liverpool's perfect record in this season's competition and gave the Turkish club their first Champions League victory of the campaign.
Watch the highlights:
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola changed five players from the side beaten by Arsenal at the weekend, starting Bradley Barcola through the middle. Trey Nyoni put the visitors ahead with his first goal for the club, a volley that struck Kojo Peprah Oppong before beating Ederson. Mason Greenwood equalised with a free-kick that deflected off Jeremy Jacquet and past Alisson.
Iraola introduced Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo after the interval. Gakpo supplied Isak for the header that restored Liverpool's advantage, but the lead did not last. Brown brought Fenerbahce level again before providing the ball from which Muriqi completed the turnaround at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium, according to the BBC's match account.
In its separate post-match report, BBC Sport said Isak's goal arrived in the 69th minute and Muriqi's winner in the 79th. Brown's equaliser came after Gakpo headed the ball beyond Alisson, leaving a close-range finish. Six minutes later, Muriqi beat three Liverpool players to Brown's looping delivery to score the decisive goal.
Iraola criticised the goals Liverpool conceded, all three of which the BBC reported had originated from set-pieces. He also said the stadium noise made communication extremely difficult and suggested that might have affected Gakpo and Alisson for the second equaliser. The defeat was Liverpool's second in four days, following a run of five successive wins.
For interim Fenerbahce coach Dirk Kuyt, the victory came immediately before a planned handover. BBC Sport reported that Emre Belozoglu would officially take charge on Thursday. Kuyt credited his players' unity and praised Brown's contributions in both defence and attack, as the hosts delivered a European win despite losing four of their opening 10 league matches.
