Brown and Muriqi complete Fenerbahce comeback to beat Liverpool 3-2
Fenerbahce ended Liverpool's perfect start to the Champions League with a 3-2 victory in Istanbul on Wednesday, overturning two deficits in Dirk Kuyt's final match as interim head coach. BBC Sport reported that Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi scored six minutes apart in the second half to secure the Turkish club's first win in this season's competition.
Watch the highlights:
Liverpool had opened the scoring through Trey Nyoni in the 25th minute. The 19-year-old's volley deflected off Kojo Peprah Oppong for his first senior goal for the club. Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later with a free-kick that struck Jeremy Jacquet on its way past Alisson, leaving the sides level at the interval.
Andoni Iraola introduced Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz after the break. Gakpo supplied Isak for a close-range header in the 69th minute, restoring Liverpool's advantage. Brown brought Fenerbahce level in the 73rd minute, then supplied the ball from which Muriqi headed the decisive goal in the 79th. Liverpool were unable to recover after losing their lead for a second time.
In BBC Sport's separate post-match reporting, Iraola attributed the defeat to avoidable defensive errors, with all three Fenerbahce goals originating from set-pieces. For the second equaliser, Gakpo's attempted header diverted the ball beyond Alisson and left Brown a simple finish. Iraola also pointed to the stadium noise as a difficulty for communication, saying even instructions from the touchline had been hard to deliver.
The result gave Kuyt a winning conclusion to his temporary spell before Emre Belozoglu takes over on Thursday. Kuyt, who played for both clubs, said he had encouraged his players to remain united, drawing on lessons from his time at Liverpool. He singled out Brown's contributions in both defence and attack after the Birmingham-born player finished with a goal and an assist.
For Liverpool, the defeat followed Sunday's loss to Arsenal, bringing two setbacks in four days after a run of five consecutive victories. Iraola said the frustration came from believing his team could win for much of the evening. Instead, Fenerbahce's response to Isak's goal turned a second Liverpool lead into a home victory.
