Fearnley rallies past Landaluce in five-set US Open comeback

Jacob Fearnley recovered from twice falling a set behind to beat Martin Landaluce in five sets and reach the second round of the US Open. The British player completed a 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory in New York, with BBC Sport reporting the result as one of two notable British comebacks on Monday.

The match stretched across two days after rain interrupted play on Sunday. AS reported that Landaluce was leading 4-3 with a break in the opening set when the contest was postponed, before Fearnley turned the match around when play resumed. The Spanish outlet recorded a total match time of four hours and 11 minutes.

Fearnley answered the loss of the first set by taking the second 6-2, but Landaluce moved back in front by winning the third 6-4. The Briton then forced a deciding set with a 7-5 fourth-set success, keeping his run alive after being two games from defeat late in that set.

The Guardian's live report showed Fearnley taking control of the decider and moving 5-1 ahead. He missed two match points and was broken while serving for the contest, allowing Landaluce to reduce the deficit, but Fearnley regrouped and served out the match at his next opportunity. The victory put him in the US Open second round for the second consecutive year.

His place in the main draw had already required an extra route. The Lawn Tennis Association reported that Fearnley lost his final qualifying match to Jurij Rodionov 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, but he subsequently entered the tournament as a lucky loser. That reprieve led to a first-round meeting with Landaluce and ultimately another main-draw win in New York.

Harriet Dart also advanced after overturning a one-set deficit against American Peyton Stearns. Dart won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, according to the Guardian and BBC Sport, earning a second-round meeting with 25th seed Marie Bouzkova. Together, the results gave Britain two comeback victories during Monday's first-round program.
