LSU Tigers Face Bullpen Crisis as Jay Johnson Navigates Pitching Shortage Against Vanderbilt
Coach Jay Johnson must carefully manage depleted pitching staff after using nine relievers in first two SEC games, with William Schmidt needing extended outing to avoid sweep against Commodores.

LSU baseball finds itself in a precarious pitching situation entering Sunday crucial finale against Vanderbilt, with coach Jay Johnson forced to navigate a depleted staff after burning through multiple relief options during the first two games of the series.

The Tigers opened SEC play with consecutive defeats, falling 13-12 in a heartbreaking Friday opener despite rallying from a 10-4 deficit before Vanderbilt delivered a walk-off home run against reliever Gavin Guidry. Saturday 11-3 loss proved even more damaging to LSU pitching depth.

Cooper Moore endured his worst outing of the season during Saturday start, surrendering four earned runs across four innings while striking out four and walking two. The performance forced Johnson to cycle through four additional relievers as Vanderbilt broke the game open with a devastating six-run fifth inning.

The big inning has been a recurring problem for LSU throughout the early portion of the season, and Saturday collapse highlighted the team vulnerability when starting pitchers fail to provide length. Johnson now faces the challenge of avoiding a sweep while managing a bullpen that has been heavily utilized over consecutive nights.

William Schmidt will carry enormous responsibility as Sunday starter, with the team requiring him to pitch deep into the game to preserve remaining bullpen options. Johnson staff needs Schmidt to deliver at least five innings to prevent another parade of relievers on what would mark the third consecutive day of heavy pen usage.

Fortunately for LSU, several key arms remain available for the series finale. Mavrick Rizy, sporting a 1.64 ERA, has not appeared in either of the first two games and represents the team most reliable relief option. His fresh status makes him a crucial weapon for high-leverage situations.

Guidry, despite throwing 32 pitches during Friday dramatic opener, should be available to contribute on Sunday. The reliever blown save was costly, but his overall effectiveness this season keeps him in consideration for important innings.

Zac Cowan presents a more complex decision after tossing 41 pitches during Friday contest. While the pitch count suggests rest might be advisable, his quality performance in the series opener could force Johnson hand if the situation demands his services.

Several other arms remain in various stages of availability. Eduardo Paz, who threw 19 pitches Saturday, and Josh Plog, who pitched just 17 pitches, both fall into the probably available category. Their limited recent usage makes them viable options for specific matchups.

The completely unavailable list includes Moore, Ricken, and Evans, who have exceeded workload limits that would prevent their use. Theophilus also appears questionable after Saturday appearance.

LSU has multiple fresh options who did not pitch in either of the first two games. Beyond Rizy, the available group includes Sheerin (3.00 ERA), Garcia (5.06 ERA), Fontenot (5.40 ERA), and several others with varying levels of effectiveness.

The series has exposed LSU vulnerability to explosive offensive innings, a troubling trend that must be addressed as SEC play continues. Johnson team has shown the ability to mount comebacks, as evidenced by Friday rally, but consistently falling behind by large margins puts enormous pressure on both the pitching staff and offense.

Vanderbilt has capitalized on LSU pitching struggles with timely hitting and clutch performances in crucial moments. The Commodores walk-off heroics Friday and decisive fifth-inning Saturday demonstrated their ability to deliver knockout punches when opportunities arise.

Sunday game represents more than just an opportunity to avoid a sweep; it serves as a crucial test of LSU resilience and Johnson ability to manage his resources effectively under pressure. The outcome could set the tone for the remainder of the Tigers SEC campaign.
