Novak Djokovic Advances to Dubai Tennis Championships Semifinals After Three-Set Battle
Novak Djokovic demonstrated why he remains one of tennis greatest competitors, rallying from a set down to defeat 21-year-old American sensation Ben Shelton 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a captivating quarterfinal at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Tuesday.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion struggled early against Sheltons aggressive baseline game and booming serve, dropping the opening set after failing to convert three break point opportunities. Shelton, who reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at last years US Open, appeared poised to claim the biggest victory of his young career.
However, Djokovic showcased the tactical adjustments and mental fortitude that have defined his legendary career. The 39-year-old Serbian began targeting Sheltons backhand with greater precision while varying the pace and placement of his returns, gradually neutralizing the Americans power advantage.
I had to find a way to disrupt his rhythm, Djokovic explained during his on-court interview. Ben was playing incredible tennis in the first set, but I knew if I could make the rallies longer and force him to generate pace from difficult positions, I would have my chances.
The turning point came at 3-3 in the second set when Djokovic broke serve following a brilliant cross-court backhand winner that clipped the line. From that moment, the momentum shifted decisively in favor of the former world number one, who controlled the remainder of the match with his trademark consistency and court coverage.
Djokovic will face either Carlos Alcaraz or Daniil Medvedev in Thursdays semifinal, depending on the outcome of Wednesday nights quarterfinal. The Serbian star is seeking his sixth Dubai title and his first ATP trophy since winning Wimbledon eight months ago. A victory would also strengthen his bid to reclaim the world number one ranking, currently held by Italys Jannik Sinner.
