Rohit Sharma's Brilliant Century Powers India to 7-Wicket Victory Over New Zealand in Mumbai
Rohit Sharma delivered a batting masterclass Tuesday evening at Wankhede Stadium, scoring an unbeaten 118 to guide India to a comprehensive 7-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second ODI of their three-match series in Mumbai.
The Indian captain was in imperious form from the outset, timing the ball sweetly and finding gaps with precision as India chased down New Zealand's total of 284 with 51 balls to spare. Rohit's innings included 12 fours and 4 sixes, showcasing the full range of his stroke-play in front of a delirious home crowd.
"Playing in Mumbai always gives me extra motivation," Rohit said after receiving the player of the match award. "The crowd support was incredible today, and I'm pleased we could give them a performance to remember. The team's confidence is really high right now."
India's chase got off to a flying start with Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal putting on 127 runs for the first wicket in just 18.2 overs. Jaiswal played the perfect supporting role with a well-crafted 63 before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner, but the platform was already set for a comfortable victory.
Virat Kohli joined Rohit at the crease and the duo added an unbroken 89-run partnership that sealed the victory. Kohli remained unbeaten on 42, playing second fiddle to his captain while rotating the strike effectively and finding the occasional boundary to maintain the required run rate.
New Zealand had earlier posted 284/8 from their 50 overs thanks to a brilliant 89 from captain Tom Latham and useful contributions from Daryl Mitchell (67) and Glenn Phillips (45). However, their total proved insufficient against India's aggressive batting approach on a true Wankhede pitch.
The victory gives India a 2-0 lead in the series with one match remaining, and Rohit's return to form will be particularly pleasing for the team management. With the Cricket World Cup approaching later this year, performances like these demonstrate that India's experienced core remains capable of delivering on the biggest stages.
