Swiatek Reaches Dubai Tennis Championships Semifinals with Straight-Sets Victory
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek continued her impressive start to the 2026 season today, securing her place in the Dubai Tennis Championships semifinals with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory over American Jessica Pegula. The Polish star demonstrated the form that has made her the dominant force in women's tennis, controlling the match from start to finish with her trademark aggressive baseline play.
Swiatek's performance was particularly impressive given the quality of her opponent. Pegula, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, entered the match having won her previous three encounters against the Polish champion. However, Swiatek showed why she has held the No. 1 ranking for the majority of the past two years, breaking Pegula's serve three times in the opening set to establish early control.
The match began with both players holding serve comfortably, but Swiatek found her rhythm midway through the first set. Her powerful forehand, which has become her signature weapon, proved too much for Pegula to handle on the quicker hard courts in Dubai. The American struggled to find angles that could push Swiatek out of her comfort zone, often finding herself on the defensive against the relentless Polish attack.
Pegula showed more resistance in the second set, managing to trade breaks with Swiatek early on. The American's fighting spirit was evident as she saved multiple break points in the fourth game, displaying the kind of tenacity that has made her one of the most consistent performers on the WTA Tour. However, Swiatek's superior court coverage and ability to hit winners from defensive positions ultimately proved decisive.
The turning point came in the ninth game of the second set, when Swiatek earned her third break of the match with a stunning cross-court forehand winner. Her celebration was measured but clearly satisfied with how she had managed the crucial moments throughout the encounter. The world No. 1 then served out the match with authority, finishing with 28 winners to Pegula's 18.
"Jessica always makes me work hard for every point," Swiatek said in her post-match interview. "I knew I had to stay aggressive and not let her dictate the tempo. My serve was working well today, and I felt I was moving better than in my previous matches here."
The victory sets up a semifinal clash with either Aryna Sabalenka or Caroline Garcia, depending on the outcome of their quarterfinal match scheduled for later today. Swiatek will be seeking her second Dubai title, having previously triumphed here in 2022 during her incredible 37-match winning streak. With this win, she extends her current winning streak to 14 matches, dating back to her victory at the Australian Open last month.
