Ryan Garcia stops Conor Benn in second round to retain WBC title

Ryan Garcia retained the WBC welterweight championship by stopping Conor Benn in the second round at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 12. MMA Fighting reported the official finish as a technical knockout at 1:25 of the round, giving Garcia a successful first defence of the belt he won against Mario Barrios in February.

Benn began aggressively, working to the body and trying to keep Garcia occupied with combinations. Garcia responded with counters and movement, finding opportunities for his left hook and an uppercut during the opening exchanges. Boxing News 24 reported that the champion landed the cleaner punches while Benn pressed forward. The challenger's early pressure did not prevent Garcia from finding openings before the first round ended.

The decisive sequence came when Garcia connected with a right hand that sent Benn to the canvas. Benn got up before the count was completed, but Garcia immediately followed with more punches. With the challenger backed against the ropes, referee Thomas Taylor intervened. Both MMA Fighting and Boxing News 24 described a knockdown followed by a sustained attack, rather than a finish in which Benn remained on the floor.

The result ended Benn's two-fight winning run. According to MMA Fighting, he had entered the contest after unanimous-decision victories over Chris Eubank Jr. and Regis Prograis. Garcia, meanwhile, had taken the championship from Barrios by unanimous decision in his previous appearance. Boxing News 24 listed Garcia's record after Saturday's victory as 26-2 with 21 knockouts, and Benn's as 25-2.

Garcia turned his attention to potential opponents during the post-fight exchanges. MMA Fighting reported that he called out Teofimo Lopez, who was at ringside, and that security restrained the fighters as they tried to approach one another. Garcia also expressed an ambition to face Devin Haney. Those comments were challenges issued after the victory, not an announcement of a signed next fight.

Elsewhere on the card, Jai Opetaia retained his Ring and Zuffa cruiserweight titles by stopping Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round, Boxing News 24 reported. Andres Cortes also defeated Mark Magsayo by unanimous decision over 10 rounds, with all three judges returning scores of 97-93.
