Nikola Jokic Records 18th Triple-Double as Nuggets Defeat Lakers 124-118 in Overtime
Nikola Jokic delivered yet another masterful performance with his 18th triple-double of the season, posting 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists to lead the Denver Nuggets to a thrilling 124-118 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday night. The reigning NBA champion's dominant display extended Denver's winning streak to nine games and dealt a significant blow to Los Angeles's playoff aspirations.
The game was tied 108-108 at the end of regulation after LeBron James hit a clutch three-pointer with 12.3 seconds remaining. However, Jokic took control in the extra session, scoring eight points and dishing out two assists to seal the victory for the Nuggets, who improved to 42-18 on the season.
"Nikola was incredible tonight," said Nuggets coach Michael Malone after the victory. "His basketball IQ and ability to make the right play every single time is what separates him from everyone else. When the game was on the line, he stepped up and made winning plays. That's what champions do."
James led the Lakers with 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 11 assists in a valiant effort, but it wasn't enough to prevent Los Angeles from dropping their third game in four contests. Anthony Davis contributed 28 points and 14 rebounds, but the Lakers struggled defensively against Jokic's multifaceted offensive attack.
The turning point came in overtime when Jokic found Jamal Murray for a three-pointer that gave Denver a 116-112 lead with 2:47 remaining. The Serbian center then scored on consecutive possessions, including a spectacular hook shot over Davis that essentially put the game away.
"Jokic is just special, man," Lakers coach Darvin Ham acknowledged. "He makes everybody around him better, and when he's playing at that level, he's virtually impossible to stop. We threw different defenders at him, but he found ways to score and create for others."
The victory moves Denver into second place in the Western Conference, just 1.5 games behind the Minnesota Timberwolves for the top seed. With 22 games remaining in the regular season, the Nuggets are positioning themselves for another deep playoff run as they look to repeat as NBA champions.
For the Lakers, the loss drops them to 32-28 and into 10th place in the Western Conference standings, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Los Angeles now sits just one game ahead of the Utah Jazz for the final play-in tournament spot, making every remaining game crucial for their postseason aspirations.
Jokic's triple-double was his 18th of the season and the 118th of his career, moving him past Jason Kidd for sixth place on the all-time list. The two-time MVP continues to be the driving force behind Denver's championship defense, averaging 26.8 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 9.2 assists per game this season.
