Alex Ovechkin Scores Two Goals to Reach 850 Career Markers as Capitals Defeat Rangers 4-2
The legendary Russian winger moved within 45 goals of Wayne Gretzky's all-time record while leading Washington to a crucial Metropolitan Division victory.

Alex Ovechkin continued his historic pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record Tuesday night, scoring twice to reach 850 career goals and power the Washington Capitals to a critical 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers at Capital One Arena.

The 38-year-old Russian legend opened the scoring in the first period with a trademark one-timer from the left circle on the power play, then added his second goal midway through the third period on a breakaway that sealed the victory for Washington. Ovechkin now sits just 45 goals away from Gretzky's seemingly untouchable record of 894 career goals.

"It's an incredible feeling to reach 850," Ovechkin said after the game. "Every goal brings me closer to Gretzky, but tonight was more about helping our team win an important game. We're fighting for our playoff lives, and we need every point we can get right now."

The victory was crucial for Washington's playoff hopes, as they moved to within two points of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. T.J. Oshie and Dylan Strome also scored for the Capitals, while Charlie Lindgren made 29 saves to earn his 23rd victory of the season.

New York received goals from Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider, but couldn't overcome Ovechkin's offensive explosion and Washington's desperate play. The Rangers remain in a playoff position but missed an opportunity to gain ground in the competitive Metropolitan Division race.

With 16 games remaining in the regular season, Ovechkin's chase of Gretzky has captivated the hockey world. The three-time Hart Trophy winner has defied age and expectations this season, scoring at a pace that suggests he could break the record sometime next season if he remains healthy.

Capitals coach Spencer Carbery praised Ovechkin's leadership and determination throughout the campaign. "Ovi has been incredible all season, not just with his goal scoring but with his compete level and leadership," Carbery said. "When we needed a big performance tonight, our captain delivered like he always does."
